Treekind™

Microfiber Innovation Challenge Finalist

London, Great Britain

Biophilica aims to disrupt the 7,000-year-old leather industry with their new plant-based alternative, Treekind™. Treekind™ is made from green waste by combining lignocellulosic feedstock with a plant-derived biodegradable binder to create a novel material that closely resembles leather. The material is 100% recyclable, non-toxic, plastic-free and, once finished, can be composted or left to safely decompose in water. The team hopes that Treekind™ will help to localize production processes as a wide variety of green waste can be used as sources for the process. During their research, the UK-based team sourced their raw materials from different London parks including The Hurlingham Club and Fulham Palace, as well as using agricultural sources such as tomato plant waste.
