SVETEX
Cambridge, MA
A team of entrepreneurs, academics, designers and students at MIT has developed a new material using smart polyethylene-based fibers that they believe can shake up the fashion industry while also protecting waterways. SVETEX is stain-resistant, cooling, antibacterial, able to be quickly washed and dried while at the same time being created from natural sources and being recyclable. This material uses significantly less water in the production process compared to commonly-used synthetic materials such as polyester and drastically reduces microfiber pollution. SVETEX has caught the eye of the US Navy, who are looking at its potential application toward cooling skull caps worn underneath helmets.
