AltMat
Alternative Materials from agriculture waste
Ahmedabad, India
AltMat are a diverse group of entrepreneurs, material scientists, textile chemists, and agricultural scientists who are united by one vision: developing new manufacturing methods that repurpose agricultural waste into environmentally-friendly, valuable products. Their innovation uses mechanical, benign chemical and microbial sciences to turn the fibrous parts of agricultural waste back into versatile and high-performing natural fibers. Unlike many other biopolymers, which often feel more akin to something like polyester, the fibers produced by AltMat feel closer to cotton or linen. The team hopes that not only will this reduce microfiber pollution but also will provide farmers with an alternative source of income and discourage the common practice of simply burning biowaste.
