Fireside chat: How biomaterials powered by organisms could replace synthetic textiles

In 2019, Central Saint Martins art and design university introduced the first MA Biodesign course for fashion graduates wishing to work with materials grown from living systems. The course integrates scientific processes with design, providing a lab environment for students to design materials using a range of organisms. As the first cohort of students are about to graduate from this new programme we discuss the opportunities, limitations and scope for biodesign in replacing polluting textiles that pose a threat to our environment. We will also explore links to synthetic biology, and the steps required to scale biomaterials to global commerciality.
